| Acrylic and Assemblage on Canvas. “Big Rig with Kurb Feelers” Blue Sky Copyright 2009 In the fall of 1952, the SC State Fair was in town. The artist and his friend Jerry Finlay didn’t have enough money to buy a ticket at the main gate, so they entered the fair their usual way. They jumped over the fence. They hit the ground behind the Gay New Orleans strip tease show, but there was a deputy sheriff guarding the tent in the rear, so they ducked behind the big truck parked there. It is the rear of the big rig that Blue Sky remembers most. It advertised the show inside with pictures of the dancers and a map of the tour of 1952. As is often the case with trucks on the road for years, images and words start to overlap one another until the entire history of the truck is laid out before the viewers eyes. Interspersed between this kaleidoscope of colors and shapes are the enigmatic statements describing the functions of the truck which now take on ambiguous meanings when juxtaposed with the references to the truck’s former uses. Through the magic of Mr. Sky’s imagination and the fuzziness of his memory, this assemblage is metamorphosed into what you see before you. The “Kurb Feelers” on the truck were popular on cars back when they had wide white side-wall tires. When backing into a parking space, the driver could tell how far he was from the curb when he heard the “Kurb Feelers” scrape loudly against the curb. In this case, the owners of the truck have fashioned homemade “Kurb Feelers” out of two rusty coat hangers. “Big Rig with Kurb Feelers” represents the passage of time as the artist, with his usual verve of pioneering iconoclastic images, meticulously represents layers of history created from chaos. It engages the eyes, ones sense of humor, and the mind. |
